Water Project for St. Anthony Primary School

1.       Introduction:
St. Anthony Primary School was initiated by MACWOF. MACWOF is a Community Based Non-Government Organization whose main objectives are to address Community Challenges such as poverty, HIV/AIDS. Environmental protection, Community Sanitation and Hygiene and Education especially for the Children in rural and slum areas.

ST. Anthony Primary School was started by MACWOFU in 2000. It is located in Rakai District - County – Sub County – Parish. The school was introduced to address the Education of the Children / Orphans of the HIV/AIDS affected and infected Families. For this area was most hit in Uganda by this disease.

St. Anthony primary School, by the close of this year 2015, we have 200 pupils and 21 teaching and non – teaching staff.
From Monday to Friday every week, we have normal classes for the pupils, Saturday we use the same place for Community development program and catechetical instructions and Sunday is the day for prayers.

2.       Project objectives:

  • To provide the School with a steady clean water supply.
  • To reduce the cost and time spent while fetching water
  • To improve on the Sanitation and hygiene practices of our pupils and the entire staff, for presently they use the same water from where animals also drink.

3.       Problem Statement.
Having a steady water supply at School will reduce the expenditure we incur while fetching water.
The nearest shallow well is 5km from the School, so during the dry season, it is worse, we cannot actually have enough water because even the shallow well gets dried up, for even the village Community members fetch from the same well including animals.

With the availability of this permanent water supply, we shall have got rid of all water shortages which have been occurring because of luck of Laborers, dry season or even because of power failure.

Having water in abundance will enables us practice standard Sanitation and Hygiene which has also been a very big challenges in our School. Poor hygiene and Sanitation practices have been promoting diseases in our School.

4.       Project implementation Strategy
The project is going to be implemented on the school land.
We are going to dig a hole of not less than 50 ft deep up to the water level (according to experts). At that water level, we shall then construct with bricks, ordinary cement and water proof cement from the deepest point to the top.
We shall then buy a submersible pump to draw water from the deepest level and deposit it in the water tank (reservoir). This reservoir will be installed at a higher level to increase on the pressure so as to supply the whole school.

We shall then have points for washing hands especially near the toilets and the kitchen.
